Are you looking to be part of a dynamic and exciting team working in, and protecting, forested environments? The Department of Fish and Wildlife, Timberland Conservation Program is seeking a motivated individual to work as a Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) in CDFW's field office in Eureka.

Under the direction of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory), the incumbent is responsible for conducting identified activities in the Northern Region Timberland Conservation Planning Program (R1A) in Humboldt and Mendocino Counties. Performance of specified activities will require in depth knowledge of Department policies, applicable environmental laws, ecological principles stream restoration principles, and timber harvest plan review procedures. Public contacts made in the course of this work are both sensitive and require good communication skills when interacting with different agencies and the public. A high degree of personal initiative is expected.

Working Conditions

Ability to use a computer and standard word processing software. Spend approximately 50% of time indoors processing documents and spend the other approximate 50% of time outdoors in rugged terrain, hot and cold conditions, experience biting insects, and some overnight camping. Ability to operate a 4-wheel-drive vehicle and all-terrain vehicle. Attend meetings and hearings, work with staff statewide to complete work assignments. Willingness to wear a prescribed uniform. This position will require moderate day travel, and occasional overnight travel up to 4 days based on business need (i.e., 4 days per month or one day per week). Use of a state-owned vehicle for travel is required between remote facilities and field sites where public transportation is not readily available. This position is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Knowledge of environmental impacts of timber harvesting plans and management plans and a general knowledge of potential violations associated with timber harvesting operations; Fish and Game Code and other laws, rules, regulations, and policies relating to the conservation and protection of fish, wildlife, and their habitats in California; CEQA statute and guidelines, and CDFW policies and practices as a Responsible and/or Trustee Agency; basic principles and techniques of natural resources management including habitats, life histories, ecological relationships, and geographical distribution of fish and wildlife in California; the legislative process; and geospatial data utilizing geographic information system (GIS) software and associated applications.

Ability to assist in complex environmental assessments dealing specifically with Fish and Game Code and the California Forest Practice Act and Rules; effectively coordinate with other state and local agencies and a variety of CDFW Branch and Regional programs to implement consistent and effective practices or procedures; write and communicate well, along with making effective presentations to management, other agencies and the public; tactfully and adequately handle difficult questions or demeanor from the public; respond to and investigate potential violations of Fish and Game Code and/or assist in investigating potential violations of the California Forest Practice Rules.

Knowledge of standard word processing software (MS Office Suite, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and Global Positioning System (GPS).
